The Great Housing Lie

6 years ago in a leaflet I described the then proposed Glasgow housing stock transfer as the great housing lie. It never had any logic to it other than to satisfy Gordon Brown's pre-occupation with a set of public-sector borrowing rules that were totally at odds with the European model. The suggestion that transferring all the remaining stock from one huge landlord to another would somehow speed up progress to community ownership was clearly absurd. All it did was delay previous progress to community ownership at enormous and totally wasted cost. The tragedy is that the enormous amounts wasted on the most expensive and pointless conveyancing transaction in Scottish history could have been spent directly on housing.
